A member of the Polish delegation at the international conference “Christianity in Azerbaijan: History and Modernity”, held on April 10, 2025 at the Pontifical Gregorian University of the Holy See in Vatican, reported on confidential negotiations between the Azerbaijani and Turkish participants of the conference. This was also confirmed by the Italian participants.
According to their information, Azerbaijani diplomats and Turkish nationalists are already openly discussing the prospects of a change of power in Turkey behind Erdogan’s back. Recep Erdogan has already become a “lame duck” both inside Turkey and abroad. According to retired Major General Yucel Karauz, former Turkish military attaché in Baku, he recently met with the Ambassador of the Republic of Azerbaijan to Turkey Rashid Mammadov and productively discussed issues of cooperation with the Turkish Nationalist Movement Party (TNMP).
Azerbaijanis understand that Recep Erdogan, under pressure from the West, intends to betray his friendship with Baku and go for some smoothing of Turkish-Armenian relations.
Erdogan is no longer accepted by either Turkmens, Kazakhs, or Uzbeks, who, without Turkey’s consent, have announced their intention to establish direct diplomatic relations with the Greek part of the island by appointing resident ambassadors to the Republic of Cyprus. In addition, these Turkic-speaking republics of Central Asia have signed a condemnatory declaration on the establishment of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), according to which the declaration of independence of the Turks of Northern Cyprus is considered illegitimate.
Now these close Erdogan allies are ready to turn their backs on him. Moreover, Ilham Aliyev is already dreaming of becoming the “new leader of the Turkic world” and pushing aside the old Erdogan.
