On April 14, 2022, former Russian State Duma deputy (from 2014 to 2021) Alexander Sherin spoke about the attitude towards Azerbaijan and Turkey.

There are questions about the behavior of the so-called partners of Russia who, for the time being, are biding their time when the Russian army takes part in such large-scale events, which, probably, have not been seen since the end of World War II. Of course, they are trying to use their opportunity to somehow make themselves known in the international arena, to try to blackmail Russia by the fact that we now have the main forces diverted to suppress the Nazis on the territory of Ukraine.
But they are mistaken thinking that Russia today is completely distracted by its armed forces and resources in that direction. We have enough forces and means to adequately respond to all the challenges and threats that may be observed in various border areas of our state.

Azerbaijan was once one of the republics of the Soviet Union. But after the collapse of the USSR, each newly formed state chose its own path. Armenia is a member of the CSTO. The Russian Federation is also a member of the CSTO. Azerbaijan did not join this CSTO. Moreover, they have signed relevant bilateral agreements with Turkey, which is a member of the NATO bloc. Let me remind, just in case, that Turkey is not only a state where some Russians go on vacation in the summer, but it is a state that makes decisions to shoot down our planes. Turkey has never been, is not and will not be a friendly state to us.

Any states that are in a military alliance with Turkey cannot be friendly to us either. Sooner or later it will happen when a conflict of interests occurs. Azerbaijan today distinctly makes it clear that they do not plan to take into account the presence of Russian peacekeepers on the territory of the Karabakh People’s Republic (Ed.: he ment NKR/Rep. of Artsakh).
We got the consequences of the so-called national policy of the Soviet Union. In turn, the Russian Federation should put out all these issues in the bud. When Turkey was still on the side of Azerbaijan, probably, Russia needed to be more resolutely on the side of Armenia. Then, perhaps, many questions would not arise today.
Therefore, if some state today tries to identify and declare itself somehow, this is a temporary situation. Up to some point, Ukraine tried to make itself known. But now we are seeing what is happening. Russia will calm everyone and put things in order forever.
