A Special Statement
OF THE COORDINATION COUNCIL OF RUSSIAN-ARMENIAN ORGANIZATIONS (CC RAO) IN CONNECTION WITH THE 30TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE MASSACRE OF THE ARMENIAN POPULATION OF THE KARABAKH VILLAGE OF MARAGHA CARRIED OUT BY THE ARMED FORMATIONS OF AZERBAIJAN
April 10 marks the tragic anniversary – the 30th anniversary of the massacre in 1992 of the Armenian population of the Karabakh village of Maragha, carried out by the armed forces of Azerbaijan.
The month of April reminds us of both the terrible crimes of Azerbaijan and the policy of silence on the part of the international community. Such impunity in the past years has given and continues to give the green light to more and more new crimes of the genocidal state of Azerbaijan.
Among the numerous crimes committed by Azerbaijan against the Armenian population, pogroms and massacres in Sumgayit, Baku, Kirovabad and other settlements of the republic, the aforementioned massacre of Armenians in the Karabakh village of Maragha occupies a special place.
It was a brutal massacre of civilians in its cruelty. According to international human rights organizations and Armenian sources, based on testimonies, 52 people were killed, 66 were taken hostage (from a one-year-old child to a 92-year-old man). The fate of 19 hostages remains unknown to this day. Two weeks later, the village was attacked again, the population was completely expelled, the houses were looted and burned. The village was practically wiped off the face of the earth.
It is unfortunate, but true: there are very few media in Russia that have written about this inhuman crime – the massacre of civilians. It has been 30 years of hushing up in the Russian society of this egregious fact.
Largely for this reason, we have witnessed new crimes, including: the inhuman large-scale aggression of Azerbaijan against Nagorno-Karabakh in April 2016 and the military aggression with numerous war crimes in 2020, organized by the Azerbaijani-Turkish tandem with the involvement of thousands of terrorist mercenaries.
Azerbaijan is making great efforts to consign the Maragha massacre to oblivion. But it is impossible to erase from the people’s memory the terrible mass crimes committed by Azerbaijan against Armenians, the massacres that were later practiced by Islamic terrorists in Syria and during the recent wars in Karabakh, namely the decapitation and dismemberment of Armenian prisoners of war and civilians.
Azerbaijan is a terrorist country that has placed armenophobia and Armenian hatred at the head of its state ideology, cannot endlessly mislead the international community and evade responsibility for carrying out Nazi and fascist ideology.
The Russian society must know the full truth about the numerous crimes against humanity committed by Azerbaijan, including the inflicted hell on civilians in the village of Maragha. Russian society must recognize this cruel truth, at least 30 years later, and condemn those responsible for the atrocities. There is no statute of limitations for such crimes.
The Coordinating Council of Russian-Armenian Organizations
- condemns the inhumane massacres committed by the armed forces of Azerbaijan against the peaceful Armenian population of the Karabakh village of Maragha;
- declares that the massacres of peaceful villagers committed in Maragрa are crimes against humanity and have no statute of limitations;
- appeals to the public organizations of Russia and Armenia, to international human rights organizations to intensify, together with international judicial bodies, activities to bring to justice the war criminals of Azerbaijan, masterminds of crimes, accomplices and falsifiers who whitewash atrocities.
We are confident that justice will prevail and the organizers and perpetrators of war crimes will be severely punished.
